Babbitt-Lined Bearings – Get your quote today

“Provides the greatest protection for your demanding applications…”

Are you looking for the best all around bearing material?

Journal and thrust bearing materials are evaluated for their:

  • Compatibility, or anti-galling properties, with mating materials
  • Conformability and Embeddability, which allows them to tolerate misalignment and foreign matter in the lubricant film
  • Corrosion Resistance that provides long shelf and service life
  • Fatigue Resistance, which protects them from cyclical loads and vibration

Babbitts, or white metals, excel above all other materials in all but the last of these properties. When a thin layer of babbitt is cast onto a stronger backing material, such as, steel, bronze or cast iron, the resulting bimetal bearing material exhibits excellent fatigue resistance as well. When the babbitt lining is thin, bimetals also provide outstanding load carrying capacity and are able to support loads well in excess of 1,000psi. Babbitt linings provide an excellent wetting surface that promotes smooth oil flow throughout the bearing minimizing vibration. Smooth laminar flow of the oil film and reduced wear are insured by the unique ability of babbitt metals to embed debris particles in their surface, thereby protecting the shaft and providing longer life.

Predictability and low level wear

Of course, the most significant advantage of babbitt bearings, and to a lesser extent all sleeve bearing materials, is their predictable and gradual wear. With or without careful monitoring, babbitt bearings will prevent the catastrophic failure associated with rolling element bearings. The most important function of the bearing is its role as the wear component that protects the shaft and other components in the rotating equipment.

Consequently, babbitt-lined bearings are used extensively in large motors, high-speed compressors, turbines, generators, internal combustion engines and a variety of critical applications.
